Guesthouse controversy settled

AN ongoing controversy over an extension built at a Portmarnock guest house and its use as a hostel appears to be finally resolved. Controversy was whipped up locally when Seaview Guest House added an extension was added to the building without planning permission. That has been the subject of enforcement action by the council which was making slow progress until ownership of the building transferred to a more co-operative owner. The council has been dealing with the new owner and significant progress was made earlier in the year on the issue with a commitment to stop using the building as a hostel and fully comply with the council requirements.

A MAJOR pruning project will be considered this winter on a Portmarnock estate where tree roots are causing damage to pathways.

Portmarnock residents sick of rubbish & broken glass

Following a canvas of Strand Mill Avenue in Portmarnock, Sinn Féin candidate for Howth/Malahide, Colm Ó Murchadha, has called on Fingal County Council to clear rubbish and broken glass immediately from the bushes surrounding a pathway at the end of this cul de sac. “The bushes around the path are a complete mess, and the broken glass could be very dangerous if a child fell” said Mr. Ó Murchadha. The residents are disappointed because this seems to be the only area in Portmarnock that the council doesn’t clean on a regular basis. One resident called the council numerous times, and when somebody eventually came to sweep the roads they didn’t pick up any rubbish around the pathway in question.

Grant will be used to improve road safety

The council is aiming to spend a € 50,000 grant from central Government on improving road safety at a dangerous junction in Portmarnock. The money is set to be spent on a new scheme for the junction of the Drumnigh Road and Station Road in the seaside town. The € 50,000 is a Low Cost Safety Improvement Scheme grant from the Government and will cover works close to the railway bridge and the junction with Station Road.

Railway car park charges defended

Fee will not be waived on Sundays/bank holidays.
Representatives from the company met with councillors on the Malahide/Howth Area Committee last week and put up a staunch defence of the charges. The company said the charges discouraged parking at rail stations by non-rail users and kept spaces available for genuine commuters. The rail company dismissed an idea from the committee that the charges be waived on Sundays and bank holidays. A spokesperson for the company told the committee that Sundays and bank holidays were business days on the rail network so there was no justification for lifting the charges on those days.

Two Sites Identified For Portmarnock Scout Den 4th March 2009

Two possible sites for Portmarnock Scout Den have been identified by Fingal County Council, both beside Portmarnock Sports and Leisure Centre. Both sites were discussed at a meeting between the Scouts and officials from the Council on 24th February 2009.
