In recent days it has been brought to my attention that a member of another party has been suggesting that I support the removal of playing pitches in Malahide Castle Demesne in favour of a car park.

This salacious rumour which is no doubt designed to damage my re election campaign is a complete misrepresentation of my views on this matter.

I suggested during my tenure as Mayor that both St. Sylvesters GAA club and Malahide Chamber of Commerce agree a mutually beneficial approach to the issue of car parking in Malahide and that if agreement could be reached the matter could be brought for further discussion with local Councillors.

This agreement was never reached and the matter never went any further.

At a local area committee for the Howth/Malahide Ward the council have committed tens of thousands of Euro to improve road safety at a dangerous bend on the Coast Road, between Malahide & Portmarnock. The bend, know locally as High Rock has been subject to many accidents over the years, the most recent of which occurred in January 2009. In 2007, an elderly motorist was sadly killed on this stretch of road and at Council level I have been appealing to the Council to make the necessary improvements to avoid further loss of life.

The council plan to improve the road surface and remove the parking bay at this corner in order to ensure that no more vehicles can leave the carriageway.
